Established to honor academic excellence, hands-on leadership, and innovation in global supply chain network design, the Matson Supply Chain Scholarship for Emerging Leaders celebrates students who demonstrate exceptional promise in optimizing end-to-end logistics, inventory control, and high-throughput production systems.
Driving Logistics and Operational Excellence
Selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants across Georgia Tech, Guy Mastrion stands out for his technical rigor, systems-level thinking, and track record of optimizing complex production logistics in mission-critical manufacturing environments.
A Dean's List student, Zell Miller Scholar, Ty Cobb Educational Foundation Scholar, and Eagle Scout, Mastrion has demonstrated academic excellence alongside his professional accomplishments. Through his engineering internships, he has applied software development, data analytics, and automation to improve manufacturing efficiency and solve complex operational challenges.
Engineering Innovation at SpaceX and General Motors
Mastrion's industry contributions demonstrate an extraordinary ability to translate logistics theory into measurable, high-impact operational gains:
SpaceX, Starbase, Texas, and Cape Canaveral, Florida: At SpaceX's Cape Canaveral operations in fall 2025, he helped build a labor visibility platform for Starship thermal hardware production. His work included technician interfaces, production-floor kiosks, and dashboards providing insight into work in progress, maintenance, workforce activity, and other operational metrics.
During a subsequent SpaceX internship at Starbase, Texas, in summer 2026, he developed a weld-inspection application that reduced inspection time from 105 seconds to 15 seconds per weld, with an estimated 876 hours saved annually. He also worked on purchasing automation, material readiness, and production workflow improvements.
General Motors, Flint, Michigan: Mastrion developed automation to analyze production and quality data. The work was associated with an estimated increase of 817 trucks per year and an estimated $18.6 million in annual profit improvement.
He also developed a broader digitization roadmap with projected annual benefits of up to $127 million if scaled across additional General Motors manufacturing facilities.
Leadership and Technical Innovation
Beyond his internships, Mastrion has explored the use of artificial intelligence in engineering workflows, including a regulatory-compliance application designed to check engineering drawings and records against applicable requirements. He has also served as an Autodesk Design & Make Student Ambassador and participated in the Georgia Tech–Boeing Forming Leaders in Technology mentorship program.
His work reflects the intersection of industrial engineering, technology, and operations that is central to modern supply chains, from manufacturing data visibility to material availability and throughput.
Celebrating the Future of Logistics
The Matson Supply Chain Scholarship for Emerging Leaders reflects a deep investment in emerging leaders who will shape the future of global supply chains and advanced logistics systems. Guy Mastrion’s proven capacity to streamline complex networks makes him a deserving recipient of the 2026–2027 award.
Please join the Georgia Tech Supply Chain and Logistics Institute in congratulating Guy on this prestigious honor as he continues to drive innovation in supply chain systems, aerospace logistics, and advanced manufacturing.
